# Slack alerts

> Send Expira expiry alerts to a Slack channel with an incoming webhook.

Expira posts alerts to a Slack channel through a Slack **incoming webhook**. Each message names the asset, says how long is left, and has a **View in dashboard** button.

## Create the webhook in Slack

**1. Create a Slack app**

Go to [api.slack.com/apps](https://api.slack.com/apps), press **Create New App → From scratch**, name it (for example "Expira") and pick your workspace.

**2. Turn on incoming webhooks**

Open **Incoming Webhooks** and switch **Activate Incoming Webhooks** on.

**3. Add a webhook to a channel**

Press **Add New Webhook to Workspace**, choose the channel for alerts and allow it. Copy the webhook URL. It starts with `https://hooks.slack.com/services/`.

## Connect it in Expira

1. Go to **Alerts → Delivery** and open **Personal** or a team's tab.
2. Under **Delivery channels**, press **Connect** on **Slack**.
3. Enter a **Name** so you can recognise it, such as "#alerts — Engineering", and paste the **Webhook URL**.
4. Save, then press **Test**. A sample alert marked as a test appears in the channel.
5. Under **Alert preferences**, tick **Slack** under **Via** and press **Save preferences**.

The webhook URL is stored encrypted and never shown again. To change it, press **Edit** and paste a new one.

> [!NOTE]
>
> Asset names are escaped, so a name containing `@channel` or a link can't ping your channel or add links to the message.
